Just like human fingerprints, mountain gorilla noses are distinct. While all individuals in every gorilla subspecies may have unique nose prints, they are the most distinct in mountain gorillas. In fact, mountain gorilla nose prints are one of the best ways for humans to learn and identify individuals in the field. Even Dian Fossey used this identification method and drew nose prints for the gorillas she watched.

Pasika

For seven months, mountain gorilla mother Pasika did something remarkable. Normally, female mountain gorillas spend their entire lives in groups, relying on an adult male silverback to protect their young. But when Pasika’s group dispersed after the death of the silverback, she never transferred to another group, which is what would normally happen. Instead, she traveled alone in the forest with her 1-year-old infant, Mashami.

“Pasika’s story proves that even after 50 years, there is still so much to learn about one of our closest living relatives,” says Dr. Tara Stoinski, President and CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of the Fossey Fund.
